UNU mission:
The
UNU is the academic arm of the United Nations system. Its mission is to
contribute, through collaborative research and postgraduate education,
dissemination of knowledge and advisory services, to efforts to resolve
the pressing global problems of human survival, development and welfare
that are the concern of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member
States. The University functions as a think tank for the United Nations
system and for UN Member States, providing knowledge-based policy
advice.
About the United Nations University International Institute for Global Health:
The
UNU International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) undertakes
research, teaching and capacity development, and dissemination of
knowledge related to key issues of human health. The aim is to
contribute to the development and strengthening of health services
policy frameworks and management actions, particularly for people in
developing countries, and to support implementation of promotive and
preventive approaches to human health.
Through its academic work,
the Institute seeks to: (1) enhance efficiency, quality, access and
equity in the delivery of healthcare services; (2) strengthen research
in global health as a means to help achieve the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs); (3) facilitate the dissemination of information and
innovation on global health in developing countries; (4) build and
enhance capacities to contribute to solving global health issues,
especially in developing countries; and (5) promote networking among
research institutions in developed and developing countries.
Responsibilities:
The
Director is the Chief Academic and Administrative Officer of UNU-IIGH
and has overall responsibility for the direction, organization,
administration and programmes of the Institute under the direction of
the Rector of UNU. The Director’s qualifications should lend to UNU-IIGH
the necessary prestige in the international scholarly community,
guaranteeing scientific excellence through internal quality control and
providing leadership and guidance for the conduct of UNU-IIGH
activities.
Qualifications:
• A doctoral qualification in Health Systems and Policies, Public Health, Epidemiology or other health-related discipline;
• a previous academic appointment at the level of an Associate or Full Professor or equivalent;
•
a strong research background and publications in areas related to
emerging problems in public health, such as non-communicable diseases,
including global mental health;
• expertise related to tele-health and e-health issues, in particular in relation to developing countries (highly desirable);
• a proven record of effective leadership and management experience at a senior level in academic or research institutions;
• excellent communication skills;
•
the ability to interact with colleagues of diverse cultural backgrounds
and with political representatives and communities in both
industrialized and developing countries;
• proven commitment to issues of human development and welfare; and
• fluency in English and at least one other official language of the United Nations.

Remuneration:
Approximate
net salary (free of tax) of US$ 117,890 (single status) – US$ 131,936
(with dependants) p.a. including post adjustment, which is subject to
change. The post carries the standard set of UN entitlements/benefits,
including participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund,
the possibility of participation in a health insurance programme, an
education grant for eligible children, removal expenses and home leave.

The Rector reserves the right to appoint a suitable candidate at a lower category.
Duration of contract:
The
period of initial contract would be for a four-year term with the
possibility of renewal on a rolling fixed-term appointment basis,
subject to requirements and satisfactory work performance. The mandatory
retirement age in the United Nations is 62.
Starting date:
It is hoped that the appointee will take up the position in the first quarter of 2013.
