Project Coordinator - International Media Support - Myanmar

International Media Support (IMS) is a non-profit organisation working to support local media in countries affected by armed conflict, human insecurity and political transition. In more than 50 countries worldwide, IMS helps to strengthen professional journalism and ensure that media can operate in challenging circumstances.

In Myanmar, with financial backing from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, IMS is developing a comprehensive package of activities, to help reform media laws and policies, expand media’s outreach and citizens’ access to information, develop skills and capacity of media professionals, and support the peace process.

In its new three-year programme ‘Media Development in Support of Democratic Governance and National Reconciliation’, IMS works directly with government institutions, journalist associations, civil society groups, and many other partners to help develop competencies, professionalism and independence of media in Myanmar.

IMS is now looking for a suitable candidate to join its local team in Myanmar.
Position title: Project Coordinator
Location: Yangon
Duration: 12 months
Contract type: Consultancy
Starting date: March 2013
(This position is open to all qualified professionals with residency/work permit in Myanmar)

Key responsibilities:

  1. Day-to-day coordination of project activities in Myanmar to ensure timely implementation of activities under the programme
  2. Represent IMS at meetings and forums in Yangon, and engage with all relevant stakeholders, to sustain and further develop relations and networking
  3. Daily supervision of local IMS staff, formulation of work plans, and capacity support and training of staff and partners as needed under the programme
  4. Plan and coordinate missions by IMS staff and external consultants
  5. Support the Programme Manager based in Copenhagen, Denmark in strategic decisions and further development of the programme
  6. Carry out research and analysis of the media and overall context in Myanmar that helps to ensure that the programme is knowledge-based and well-informed
  7. Monitor the implementation of activities and results and document these, and assist in developing the Results Framework and a system for Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) at the local level
  8. Draft Progress Reports and assist in donor reporting and other communication activities related to the programme
  9. Direct implementation of specific activities and other duties, as assigned by the Programme Manager

Qualifications and skills required:

  • A master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field (management, communications, social sciences, journalism) and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience. Candidates who do not hold a master’s degree will be considered with at least 7 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge about media development in particular and good understanding of international development principles in general
  • Documented project management skills and experience in supervision/management of staff
  • Documented experience in logical framework design and M&E
  • Experience in working for a non-governmental organization and/or other types of international organisations
  • Experience in working in Myanmar is considered a strong asset
  • Fluency in English language. Knowledge of Myanmar language(s) is considered an asset
