Client Description:
Samarinda Senior High School 10 is a senior high school managed by the Government of East Kalimantan. The students come from the province’s 14 regencies and are accepted into the school based on merit. The Government provides a full scholarship and boarding facilities for each student.
The school has recently been taken under the administration of the Education Department of East Kalimantan Province and new teachers and management staff have been appointed. SMA N 10 is aiming to become a school that meets international standards and prepare students with a high level of competency that allows them entrance into international universities.

Assignment Summary:
Reviewing the teaching methodology and curriculums has been identified as one the main strategies to improve the quality of education at Samarinda Senior High School 10. This is necessary, particularly, in Science Education in English, as the current methodology is outdated and ineffective.
In order to redesign the science curriculum and teaching methodology, the school has requested the assistance of an Australian Volunteer.

Assignment Outcomes:
  • A new science teaching methodology has been developed
  • Teachers are able to apply the new teaching methodology
  • The Science curriculum has been improved
  • Teachers and students’ understanding of science research is enhanced
  • Teachers have an increased ability and confidence to teach science in English
  • Teachers and students have better understanding of English for science
  • Students are more confident and familiar with opportunities for higher education overseas
Experience:
The client has requested a volunteer with the following skills and experience:
  • Tertiary qualifications in Education and/or Science
  • Five years of experience in curriculum development
  • Science research experience
ABV expects all volunteers to possess the following attributes:

  • patience, tolerance and flexibility
  • cultural sensitivity and the ability to live and work in a new cultural setting;
  • willingness to work with limited resources within a challenging and tropical environment
