Job Description
The role of Senior Operational Risk Officer aims to
supporting and managing the wide range of risks facing the bank on a day to day
basis. The Senior Operational Risk Officer mainly oversees the Operational risk
function. Other risks in the areas of credit, market, liquidity, strategy and
compliance maybe assigned. It is a supervisory role reporting to Risk
Management and Compliance Manager with responsibilities that includes, but not
limited to;
- Supporting
the Risk Management and Compliance Manager to ensuring smooth continuity
of risk function initiatives, plans, activities, and people management.
- Supporting
the bank in developing, reviewing and updating risk registers in various
functions as a basis for preparation of the bank’s risk profiles and
subsequent monitoring.
- Develop,
update and monitor business Key Risk Indicators and ensuring appropriate
remedial actions/strategies are made and implemented for any adverse
trends.
- Ensure
proper Incidents and Operational Loss data Management process are in place
and a complete and accurate incident log is updated and maintained.
- Ensure
analyses of various scenarios are adequately performed and timely action
plan drawn for mitigation on any adverse trend.
- Perform
assessment on controls’ adequacy and make recommendations for
improvements.
- Monitor
any changes/trends in business environment as a basis for recommendations
for changes to relevant operating policies and processes.
- Support
the Business Continuity Management by ensuring the bank has developed
adequate business continuity plans, crisis management plans and disaster
recovery plans at required levels.
- Review
on adequacy of existing functional structures and committees against the
delegated roles, authority, and limits to ensure efficiency and
effectiveness.
- Ensure
designed risk mitigation measures are implemented through management
decision, operational policies, Management Information Systems, and other
means suitable
- Supervise
Risk officers (direct reports) to ensure effective execution of their
roles. Manage and monitor performance and development of direct reports.
- Increase
the operational risk culture in the bank using a bottom-up approach

and experience in modern Enterprise Risk Management practices in Financial
Services industry to providing guidance on required changes.
- Interpersonal
skills to effectively communicate with and manage customer expectations
(internal and external), and other stakeholders who impact performance.
- Technical
skills to effectively perform/guide performance of Risk Officers in a
manner that consistently meets established benchmarks.
- People
management/leadership to nurture and sustain employees’ satisfaction, and
optimize their productivity.
- Knowledge
and effective application of all relevant banking policies, processes,
procedures and guidelines to consistently achieve required benchmarks.
- Self
–empowerment to enable development of open communication, teamwork and
trust that are needed to make the required changes.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- At
least 3 years working experience in Internal Controls, Compliance, Audit or
Risk Management in financial services industry/sector
- At
least 1 year experience in management/supervisory role
- Bachelor’s
degree in Banking, Economics, Accounting, Business, Credit, Finance or
Equivalent studies from a recognized high learning institution.
Professional qualifications in Risk Management and Compliance or
post-graduate studies will be an added advantage.
- Adequate
skills in communication and report writing
- Good
command in written and spoken English Language
- High
proficiency in use of computerized applications, including; Microsoft
Visio, Excel, Word, and Power Point.
