Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Conference and Documentation Services Section, in the Office of the Executive Secretary. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Chief, Conference and Documentation Services Section and under the general supervision of the Deputy Executive Secretary.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent is
required to perform the following functions:
1. Revises translations and original reports dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations.
2. Translates, mostly without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency.
3. Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.
4. Carries out linguistic research and prepares terminological bulletins and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools.
5. Counsels and assists translators and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Unit, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required.
6. Participates in the setting of terminology standards.
7. Plans and oversees the management of activities undertaken by the Unit and ensures that the outputs produced by the Unit maintain high-quality standards
8. Serves as officer-in-charge of the Section, as required
9. Performs other related duties as required

Education
A first-level degree from a university or
institution of equivalent status. Must have passed either the United Nations
Competitive Examination for Chinese translators or the United Nations
Competitive Examination for Chinese interpreters.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in
translation, revision or interpretation, of which three preferably should have
been in the United Nations or other international organizations.
Relevant IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, Official Document System (ODS) and web-based applications, required.

Languages
A perfect command of Chinese, which must the
candidate’s main language. Fluency in oral and written English is required.
Must have knowledge of another official language of the United Nations, as
tested by the relevant United Nations competitive examination.

Special Notice
Staff members are subject to the authority of the
Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff
are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in
