Org. Setting and
Reporting
This post is located within the Conference Services Section
(CSS), Administrative Services Division (ASD) of the Economic and Social
Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
The English Reviser/Translator reports directly to the Chief of CSS.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the English Reviser/Translator
will be responsible for the following duties:
1- Revises
translations covering a broad range of technical subjects dealt with by the
Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the United Nations;
2- Translates, mostly
without revision and often under tight schedules, texts of sensitive, complex
or technical nature covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the
Commission and the United Nations, particularly those requiring demonstrated
experience and recognized proficiency;
3- Develops new
terminology for use where none exists in the target language;
4- Carries out
linguistic research and, as appropriate, prepares terminological bulletins and
glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools;
5- Provides advice
and assists translators by briefing them on the procedures and practices
related to language functions, terminology and broad range of subjects, as
required;
6- Participates in
the setting of terminology standards;
7- Performs any other
duties in other language functions as required;
8- Performs other related
duties as required.

Education
A first-level degree from a university or institution of
equivalent status. Candidates for this
position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for
English Language Translators.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in translation, three
years, preferably, within the United Nations.
Some experience in revision is desirable.
Languages
English and French are two working languages of the United
Nations Secretariat. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post,
a perfect command of English, which must be the candidate's primary language,
and fluency in Arabic are required. Knowledge of at least one other United
Nations official language, preferably
French, is desirable.
Assessment Method
The candidates will undergo a written assessment in revising
texts of technical and politically sensitive nature as well as a
competency-based interview. Only

Special Notice
Staff members are subject to the authority of the
Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff
