The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for
a truly outstanding economist to work with us as a postdoctoralfellow to explore the potential impacts of India’s water future on
the country’s agriculture and economy. Working with a set of senior scientists, the incumbent will develop a quantitative
understanding of the availability and use of surface water and groundwater irrigation, associated policies and the potential for
agricultural production across Indian regions.
The incumbent will use econometric tools along with hydro-economic models to
translate that understanding into an assessment of the supply, demand and trade implications of technical and policy scenarios
related to alternative water futures. Regional variations in cropping systems and the availability of surface water and groundwater, as
well as a practical framing of the institutional constraints and policy options facing Indian decision makers, are likely be
important aspects of this work.
The position will allow the incumbent exceptional opportunities
for growth. The selected candidate will spend approximately half of their time at the headquarters of IWMI in Pelawatte,
Battaramulla, Sri Lanka, or at the Institute’s regional office in New Delhi,
India. During the other half, the incumbent will be based in Washington,
DC, working with the Market and Trade Economics Division of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Economic
Research Service. In this way, the candidate will receive mentoring support from a range of india experts, hydrologists and
economists. The incumbent will report to the Leader of IWMI’s research theme on Water and Society.

on agricultural and water policy issues in India;
• conduct appropriate econometric and
economic simulation analyses on the relationships between irrigation water
availability,
policies and agricultural outcomes in India;
• work with modelers at IWMI and USDA to
apply existing hydro-economic models to the context of India, or develop
new
tools
for conducting the analysis;
• co-author journal articles to indicate
scientific rigor, and also disseminate findings through non-technical channels
to
help
promote change; and
• work within multi-disciplinary teams
including hydrologists, agricultural scientists and economists.
You must possess:
• a PhD or equivalent in economics or a
closely related discipline;
• strong econometric and economic modeling
skills;
• ability to work in a team with people
from different cultural and professional backgrounds;
• strong analytical skills and a learning
attitude;
• strong written and oral communication
skills; and
• willingness to travel.
It would be useful if you have:

issues;
