Org. Setting and Reporting

 

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. The role of ESCAP as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

This position is located in the Conference and Documentation Services Section, in the Office of the Executive Secretary. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of  the Chief, Russian Language Unit and under the general direction of the Chief, Conference and Documentation Services Section (CDSS).

 

Responsibilities

 

Within the delegated authority, the Translator will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Translate, generally subject to revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations
2. Identify new terminology material and submit it for consideration of the revisers
3. Perform other related duties as required.

Education

 

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for the recruitment of Russian translators.

 

Work Experience

 

A minimum of two years of experience in translation and use of relevant standard computer software, electronic tools and databases. Familiarity with terminology databases, the Official Document System and modern technology tools, such as voice recognition, digital dictation and Computer Assisted Translation tools, would be an asset.

 

Languages

 

Perfect command of Russian, which must be the candidate’s main language. Must have an excellent knowledge of English and knowledge of an additional official language, as tested by the relevant United Nations competitive examination.

 

Assessment Method

 

Qualified applicants will be evaluated through a competency-based interview and/or other assessment methods.
