Background
A donor, thought to be FAO, delivered several Wintersteiger small grain trial plot planters to MOA / Kurdistan research stations in 2003.  There may be more of these planters located in Central and Southern Iraq, but this is not known at this time.  Unfortunately, the planters were delivered and put into storage and have remained in storage until the current time.  There have been large changes in personnel on the sites and it is unclear if farm personnel were trained in the use of the planters.  However, nobody remains who is familiar with the units or their operation.   The Iraqi farmers asked USAID-Inma for assistance in putting these implements into operation.

Proposed Activity
USAID-Inma proposes to contract a qualified technician to work in Erbil to accomplish the following tasks:
·         Visit up to 4 sites in Kurdistan to check the planters and make inventory of spare parts available.
·         Make a list of recommended, necessary spare parts, which are not available in the inventory, if any.
·         Inspect the planters and repair any degradation that has occurred over the 8 years of storage.
·         Hold training sessions for MOA personnel who will be using these planters.  This could include MOA personnel from the central MOA if they are interested.  This training could be held for all participants at one site or it could be on multiple sites in Kurdistan.
·         Work with USAID-Inma personnel to develop Kurdish and Arabic language Operators Manual, Parts Catalog and Operational Instructions for the units.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Technical expertise with Wintersteiger machinery and agricultural products.
  • Experience delivering training to farmers and farmer associations, desired.
  • Ability to speak Arabic or Kurdish a plus, but not required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
