Internship Topic
SME Development in Emerging Asian Countries


Summary of Job Description
The intern will analyze the SME sector and challenges for one or two countries, as provided by the supervisor. Specifically the intern is expected to:
  • collate data on SMEs in Asia.
  • analyze data.
  • provide a suitable case study.
  • assist with drafting of various project documents for SME projects.
The report should suggest reforms that would be useful for SME’s to thrive to reduce the regulatory burden in the chosen country/countries and research options on how to include women as borrowers e.g.:
  • what sort of supporting infrastructure should be established and developed for women?
  • preferred products for women?
  • what form should the loan take? Individual, joint etc.

Expected Outcomes

  1. Produce a presentation on findings from the topic mentioned above.
  2. Provides recommendations for ADB for areas of support for SMEs.
  3. Provide inputs to SME projects that are currently being processed by ADB.
  4. Submit a final report.

Educational Requirements:

Candidates must:
  • be enrolled in an MBA program and has completed a Bachelors program with specialization in finance and/or development finance, business, economics, or social development and has strong background in economics and good understanding of current trade issues, at a school in one of the ADB member countries, both prior to and after the internship assignment; and
  • be engaged in academic study in a field directly related to ADB's work.

Relevant Experience And Other Requirements:

  • Have an interest in development finance and banking.
  • Preference for candidate with bank analysis and an interest in SMEs.

Immediate Reporting Relationships / Other Information:

Other Information
  • Position reports to assigned Professional Staff Supervisor.
  • Candidates must be a national of one of ADB’s member countries.
  • Past interns are ineligible to apply in subsequent years.
  • Close relatives of ADB personnel are ineligible to apply but ADB spouses may apply if the eligibility requirements are met.
  • Internship duration is 8-16 weeks.
  • Assignment is from April to June/August 2013.
