Development of Urban Transport Indicators Informing Strategic Options for Sustainable Transport Initiatives in CWRD Countries


Summary of Job Description
The intern will help CWUW to develop urban transport indicators and collect necessary data to document urban transport assessments of CWRD countries and inform strategic options for sustainable transport initiatives.
This work will require review of existing urban transport assessments and sector roadmaps, consultation with project officers, review of the relevant literature, data collection, consultation with international transport associations, and with other development partners. The results of the internship will inform strategic options and enable CWUW to better inform project design, including improved baseline data for design and monitoring framework purpose.
Detailed tasks for the intern’s assignment are:
1. Propose and develop a list of urban transport indicators suited to CWRD countries context.
2. Collect data from all available sources (for selected countries) covering the current situation and trends in the last decade.
3. Review and summarize the most recent literature and urban transport best practice in former soviet countries and Eastern Europe; Recommend possible application in CWRD countries.
4. Propose strategic options for selected CWRD countries.
5. Prepare didactic presentations to be used by project officers during consultation with officials in CWRD countries and other development partners.

Expected Outcomes

  • Database of Urban Transport Indicators for CWRD countries
  • Data analysis, including summary sheets per country and comparative charts
  • Summary report on recent best practice in urban transport for former soviet countries and Eastern Europe
  • Final presentation

Educational Requirements:

Candidates must:
  • be enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in Urban Planning or Urban Transport Planning, at a school in one of the ADB member countries, both prior to and after the internship assignment.
  • be engaged in academic study in a field directly related to ADB's work.

Relevant Experience And Other Requirements:

  • Has some experience in collecting and analyzing urban transport data.
  • Is familiar with the issues and literature of sustainable urban transport.
  • Has working knowledge in developing countries.
  • Has excellent communication and written English skills.
  • Has Russian language proficiency, or can read basic Russian to be able to work with relevant websites (preferred).
  • Has some knowledge and understanding relevant to issues in CWRD countries (preferred).

Immediate Reporting Relationships / Other Information:

Other Information
  • Position reports to assigned Professional Staff Supervisor.
  • Candidates must be a national of one of ADB’s member countries.
  • Past interns are ineligible to apply in subsequent years.
  • Close relatives of ADB personnel are ineligible to apply but ADB spouses may apply if the eligibility requirements are met.
  • Internship duration is 12 weeks.
  • Assignment is from April to July 2013.
