Civil / Structural Engineer - International Relief & Development - Kandahar, Afghanistan

Civil/Structural Engineer provides site assessment and detailed design development for medical faculty building construction in Afghanistan; must have 15 years of experience in Construction and a B.S. degree in civil engineering. Work to involve Site Master Planning and Design; Core/Shell Planning & Design; and Programming and Interior Planning.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Civil Engineering Services to include: Site works like paths, retaining walls, etc. soil and waste drainage around the building, Storm water drainage around the building, sanitary plumbing, Water supply, Fire hydrants, hose reels and extinguishers, Sanitary fixtures and fittings. All working drawings will be prepared in Auto Cad format with a PDF format soft. 
  • Structural Engineering Services to include: Advice on all materials related to construction, structural engineering, demolition and excavation if any, preparing structural drawings and specifications. The buildings and structures are required to be earthquake-resistant and able to resist high winds. All working drawings will be prepared in Auto Cad format with a PDF format soft.

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Structural Engineering with 15 years of experience in construction.
  • Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Past experience in the design of structures and will have prepared drawings (on Auto CAD) showing structural framing, sizes of individual members and reinforcement details in concrete.
  • Will be required to submit photocopies of testimonials/certificates from employers which describe the structural design work or projects which were personally completed during his/her employment.

Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Experience with academic and medical design/construction projects.
  • Experience working in conflict post/conflict situations.
  • Familiarity with the Dari or Pashtu language.

Travel Requirements:
  • 90% in Afghanistan

Physical Requirements:
All IRD personnel who work in Afghanistan must be physically able: (i) to function for extended periods of time wearing personal protective body armor weighing approximately 35 pounds and a helmet weighing approximately 5 pounds; (ii) to walk comfortably over rough terrain; and (iii) to ascend up to six flights of stairs on a daily basis.  Candidates will be required to provide medical certification to IRD's satisfaction of the absence of any conditions that might impair a candidate's ability to meet these requirements.
