Client Description:
The South Seas Evangelical Church (SSEC) is a church organisation registered as a Charitable organisation under the Charitable Act of Solomon Islands. SSEC conducts its activities to serve the general public and particularly its adherents which make up around 20% of the entire Solomon Islands population.
To ensure that services are provided to its members, SSEC organised itself into 5 regions covering 8 of the 10 provinces that comprise Solomon Islands. The regions are further divided into multiple associations and local church groups.

SSEC offers ecclesiastical, health and educational services. In the area of health services, SSEC operates at least 2 working clinics but envisages increasing this number to 5 rural health centres in strategically located larger villages.

In its educational area of work, SSEC operates a conglomerate of 14 Schools and 10 Rural Training Centres (RTC). The schools provide government approved Year 1 to 12; and the RTCs offer vocational training particularly aimed at enabling graduates to be self-reliant and community developers.

Assignment Summary:
The SSEC Education Department is responsible for the management of all schools, training centres and other institutions registered under the SSEC Education Auhtority. To manage these insitutions more effectively, SSEC needs to develop an efficient way of storing and retrieving information, which will have to be supported on a database. SSEC would like an Australian Volunteer to assist with the development of this database, which will contain all teachers’ information and the profiles of all schools, training centres and institutions registered under the SSEC Education Auhtority. This information is required for informed planning and development of educational services provided by the church.

Assignment Outcomes:
  • SSEC Education Authority able to govern and manage its schools in more transparent and efficient way with better access to relevant information about teachers and schools.
  • SSEC Education Authority capable to provide relevant and timely reports including the ability to upload information regarding its schools to the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development.
  • SSEC Education Authority capable of updating information regarding its teachers and schools in an efficient and effective manner.
  • SSEC Education Department staff with the capacity to use the databases developed efficiently and effectively.
Experience:
The client has requested a volunteer with the following skills and experience:
  • Qualifications: Database development or other similar IT related qualifications
  • Experience: Database design, development and management. Previous experience doing IT work in education institutions is desirable.
