Resident Journalism Trainer - South Sudan

Duration: Starting ASAP, 3 months initially, until September 2014. The position could be extended depending on availability of funding and performance.

GENERAL FUNCTION
Internews is currently seeking experienced broadcast professionals to work as senior Resident Journalism or Production trainers.  If you have worked at a senior producer to program editor level you could be part of an exciting project to establish South Sudan's first commercial local radio network. These roving field based opportunities will also let you experience life living in the communities where the stations are operating. 
You will give on-going training and mentoring, building the managerial, production and journalistic capacity of these frontier stations.  Your role will help create a strong, independent media sector that can fully play its role as a guardian of freedom.

Preferably you have experience of, or understand, the difficulties of living in post conflict environments in Africa.  In compensation you will have helped in creating an independent commercial radio network in the world’s newest country whilst being paid a competitive salary with a benefits package. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of a broadcast training program across South Sudan.
  • Organize and train radio reporters and managers with limited experience on content, production and radio station management and other specialized topics.
  • Assist in the development of and training in the implementation of radio station policies, procedures and structures to ensure smooth and professional running of the stations. 
  • Assist in the Monitoring & Evaluation of the project, including daily program logs and training reports.
  • Coordinate with NGOs and other organizations to facilitate creative program sharing and collaboration.
  • Work extensively in the community to increase community participation in creative radio programming.
  • Provide media literacy training with NGOs, government partners and civil society.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates need to be able to:
  • Show a proven ability to train new recruits with no previous experience to become broadcasters.
  • Mentor staff to become accomplished senior reporters and station editors. 
  • Assist in occasionally managing a radio station in a remote location with little engineering support.
  • Be fluent in the use of digital field recording equipment, basic studio equipment and digital editing.
  • Show how you have increased ratings/revenues through creative programming, scheduling or branding in the previous stations you have worked in. 

The candidate must have:
  • A minimum of 3 years radio broadcasting experience, preferably in a senior producer/editor role.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in editing or mentoring in broadcast news writing or studio production.
  • An ability to adjust to shifting political circumstances and create programming accordingly.
  • Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the work place and experience supervising staff.
  • Experience working in conflict or post conflict environments is desired.
  • Must be self-reliant, resourceful, good problem-solver, good humored, and flexible.
