Job Purpose:

Internship Topic
Application of Ecosystem-based Approaches for Climate Change Adaptation

Summary of Job Description
Asia and the Pacific are acknowledged as being highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In response, ADB is has developed a climate change strategy – Addressing Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific – which identifies 5 institutional priorities, including promoting climate-resilient development. As part of ADB’s response, a range of actions are being implemented and developed, including climate proofing of projects and infrastructure, and supporting countries in the region with knowledge, tools and financing to address adaptation and climate resilience needs. As part of this approach, ADB would like to identify areas of potential application for ecosystem based adaptation. This would include looking at opportunities for more integrated infrastructure planning and the use of “green infrastructure approaches” that conserve ecosystem services and functions and provide associated resilience benefits to human populations including the protection of physical infrastructure. The assignment will examine these issues with the aim of identifying needs, opportunities, constraints and approaches for applying ecosystem based adaptation within ADB operations. The main task would be a comprehensive literature review on the theory and practices of ecosystem based adaptation, including reviewing and critically evaluating case examples of application in Asia and the Pacific. Consultations will be held with ADB regional departments to look at the current use of ecosystem based adaptation approaches, and scope for further development. The outcomes of the assignment will feed into ADB’s Adaptation Initiative and support to developing member countries in the region.
