Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located within the Conference Services Section (CSS), Administrative Services Division (ASD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The English Editor reports directly to the Chief of CSS.
               
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the English Editor will be responsible for the following duties:

1 - Edits English texts of a specialized or technical nature in order to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice;
2 - Carries out extensive editing where required, including rewriting, abridging and restructuring texts for greater readability and better logical sequence;
3 - Uses all sources of information for terminology and substantive research on the subject, including electronic sources and electronic tools for online editing;
4 - Consults with author divisions and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors;
5 - Checks his/her language version against the language of the original draft, redrafts incorrect or unclear passages and translates and inserts any passage that has been omitted;
6 - Provides authors or others submitting documentation with information on specific aspects of editorial policy and practice and assists them in the preparation of manuscripts;
7 - Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this post must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for English Editors.
               
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in editing is required. Experience within the United Nations Organization is desirable.
               
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, perfect command of English which must be the candidate’s primary language is required. Knowledge of Arabic and another official United Nations language, preferably French, is desirable.
               
Assessment Method
Candidates will undergo a written assessment and a competency-based interview. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
