Project/Proposal Summary:
Women in Transition (WIT) will invest in opportunities that enable educated women to enter and advance into decision making positions in Afghanistan’s public, private and civil society sectors. For young women with at least a high school education, WIT will provide access to advanced professional development opportunities through four specific practice areas under the WIT umbrella: 1) Women in the Economy, 2) Women’s Rights Groups and Coalitions, 3) Women in Government, and 4) Women’s Leadership Development.  This is a five year project based in Kabul, Afghanistan.


Position Summary:
The Director of Leadership Development will manage and oversee Task Orders under the Women’s Leadership Development (WLD) Component of the WIT IQC. The purpose of the WLD activities is to foster leadership among young educated women in public, private and civil service sectors through professional development on advanced management and leadership skills. The WLD will support the other 3 WIT CLINs in the development of relevant courses on topics of leadership competency, creation of a group of prominent women role models, and an examination of different leadership models, including traditional transactional and innovative transformational approaches.


Responsibilities:
• Design and manage the implementation of all component activities, ensuring coherence among the inputs of international and domestic partners;
• Oversee the development and implementation of courses on critical thinking, problem solving, strategic planning, strategic communications, negotiation, conflict management, customer service, performance monitoring and related topics;
• Liaise with a broad-range of stakeholders from government institutions, private sector companies, universities, local women’s organizations and other technical assistance projects to ensure broad participation of women from all sectors in project activities and training programs;
• Manage the recruitment and supervision of component staff and consultants;
• Establish procurement mechanisms for and manage sub-contracts;
• Supervise and ensure high-quality delivery of all training courses, focusing on diverse target groups of women participants and measurable impact on women’s leadership in all sectors;
• Ensure robust monitoring of component activities and impact;
• Ensure timely donor reporting on all component activities and results;
• Manage component budget and expenditures;
• Coordinate with donor counterparts, responding to all component related requests as required;
• Participate in senior management processes and decision-making.


Qualifications:
• Significant experience managing programs related to leadership and delivery of training courses, especially for women;
• Demonstrated experience in developing and facilitating training programs with course curriculum on capacity-building and leadership development topics;
• Substantive expertise in at least some of the training program themes noted above;
• Experience designing and implementing training courses and materials;
• Demonstrated knowledge of different leadership methods and approaches;
• Experience in Afghanistan or other conflict-affected and/or Islamic contexts, and understanding of the challenges to women’s leadership faced in these contexts;
• Master’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience;
• Experience with USAID or other donors;
• Ability to live in Kabul and travel within the country;
• Outstanding spoken and written communication skills in English; proficient Dar and/or Pashto preferred.
